The Best Fabrics for DTG Printing (and Why They Matter)

When it comes to Direct-to-Garment (DTG) printing, not all fabrics are created equal. If you’re looking for crisp designs, vibrant colours, and long-lasting prints, the fabric you choose makes all the difference. So, what materials give you that perfect print? Let's dive in!

Why Fabric Choice Matters in DTG Printing

DTG printing works by applying water-based inks directly onto the fabric, kind of like using a high-tech inkjet printer on your favourite tee. For the ink to bond properly and create vivid, durable designs, the fabric needs to absorb it just right. The wrong fabric can lead to dull colours, faded prints, or even designs that wash out after a few cycles. And nobody wants that—unless you’re into the “accidentally vintage” look.

If DTG printing had a best friend, it would be 100% cotton. They go together like peanut butter and jelly—or coffee and Mondays. Here’s why:

Benefits of 100% Cotton for DTG Printing

  • Vibrant Colours: Cotton fibres absorb water-based inks like a sponge, resulting in bright, bold designs that practically pop off the fabric.

  • Soft Feel: The ink soaks into the fabric, maintaining that soft, breathable feel—no plasticky overlays here! (Because nobody wants to feel like they’re wearing a sticker.)

  • Durability: High-quality cotton holds onto prints better, meaning your design stays looking fresh even after multiple washes. Yes, even if your laundry skills are questionable.

Best for: Custom t-shirts, hoodies, tote bags, and baby clothes—basically, anything you want to be comfy and colourful!

2. Cotton Blends: A Balance of Comfort and Cost

Cotton-polyester blends (like 80/20 or 50/50) can work with DTG printing, but they’re a bit trickier—kind of like trying to cook a gourmet meal with a microwave.

Pros and Cons of Cotton Blends for DTG

  • Colour Vibrancy: The higher the cotton content, the better the print quality. A 50/50 blend might look slightly less vibrant than 100% cotton—think “subtle glow” vs. “outdoor billboard.”

  • Durability: Blends can be more durable and resistant to shrinking, but the synthetic fibres don’t hold ink as well. (Your design might fade faster than your New Year’s resolutions.)

  • Feel: Blends often feel softer and lighter, especially for athletic wear. Perfect if you’re going for that “I work out” vibe, even if you don’t.

Best for: Casual wear, lightweight apparel, or when you’re balancing cost with quality—because who doesn’t love saving a buck?

DTG and polyester are not the best of friends. In fact, they’re more like awkward acquaintances at a party. Here’s why:

Challenges of Using Polyester for DTG Printing

  • Poor Ink Absorption: Polyester doesn’t absorb water-based inks well, leading to faded, patchy prints that look like they’ve already been through the wash—twice.

  • Colour Bleeding: Heat used during the curing process can cause dye migration, where the shirt’s color bleeds into the print. It’s like your shirt decided to go rogue.

That said, there are specialised pretreatments that can help DTG work on polyester, but results can vary—kind of like a blind date.

Best for: Honestly, we recommend DTF (Direct-to-Film) or sublimation printing for polyester. Trust us, it’ll save you some headaches.

Pro Tips for Perfect DTG Prints

  1. Go for Ring-Spun Cotton: It’s softer and smoother, giving your prints a cleaner finish. Your skin will thank you.

  2. Pre-Shrunk Fabrics: Avoid surprises after the first wash—nobody likes a shrunken masterpiece (unless you’re into crop tops).

  3. Pretreatment Matters: Even the best fabrics need proper pretreatment for optimal ink absorption and durability. Think of it as the primer before the paint.

The right fabric can make or break your DTG print. If you’re aiming for vivid, professional-looking designs, 100% cotton is your go-to. Blends can work for specific styles, but understanding their quirks will help you get the best results.

Got questions about the best fabric for your next DTG printing project? We’re here to help you make sure your designs not only look amazing but last for the long haul. Because nobody wants their favourite shirt to fade into oblivion after just one wash!
